First Kevin John learned that his tickets for the Sept. 1 Ohio State University-Youngstown State football game had been given to the alumni band, and then he lost his digital camera with pictures of his 10-year-old son Noah posing with Brutus Buckeye at the pre-game festivities outside Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, says The Columbus Dispatch.
"We were really disappointed. I didn't have any seats and I didn't have my camera," said John. "I told my son, 'We've got the memories in our mind. We'll have to remember those.' "
According to the story, John's lost camera was picked up by Michelle Montgomery and her husband on their way to the game. Not confident that the university's lost-and-found service would be able to locate the rightful owner, Montgomery decided to try a social experiment by searching for him using the Internet.
Montgomery uploaded a picture showing the man she assumed to be the camera owner, a young boy and Brutus Buckeye. She attached it to an e-mail and sent it to 14 friends.
Did they recognize this man? If not, she asked, could they please circulate it to other friends and football fans? According to the article, in less than 48 hours later, Montgomery was talking with John, who learned from two unrelated e-mail sources that someone in Columbus had found his camera.
"It shows the power of the Internet, e-mail and the Buckeye network. It's amazing how many Buckeye fans are out there," John said in the story. "If it wasn't for that picture that I had an OSU cheerleader take of me and my son, I still wouldn't have my camera today."
